Udemy Review 2026: Is It Actually Worth Buying Courses On?

Udemy is the biggest course marketplace on the internet, and also the most misunderstood. Newcomers see a $94.99 price tag and assume it's expensive; regulars know that exact course will be $12.99 by the weekend. Understanding how the platform actually prices and vets courses is the difference between overpaying for something mediocre and getting a genuinely great course for the price of lunch.
How the pricing really works
Udemy is buy-once, own-forever: you purchase a course outright and keep lifetime access, including future updates the instructor makes. The list price is theater. Between sitewide sales, instructor coupons, and first-visit discounts, most active buyers have simply never paid full price for anything. Treat any price above about $20 as "not on sale yet" and wait a few days — the discount almost always comes.
This is the opposite of a subscription. There's no monthly fee, nothing to cancel, and no pressure to "use it before it renews." You buy the specific thing you want and it's yours.
