Required Training for Sideburn Rangers

This is the official online training for Sideburn Rangers, required annually before a Ranger's first shift (in-person training is also offered at the event itself). Anyone who has already completed Black Rock Ranger training can substitute that, plus a review of the Sideburn manual.

What the course covers

What a Ranger is — and isn't
The Ranger leadership structure and the idea of social capital
Core "how to Ranger" practices, including FLAME and Must Reports
An ICS (Incident Command System) overview and radio use
Practice scenarios to apply what's been covered

What the role actually is

Rangers are explicitly not enforcers or a security force. They roam the event in teams, watch out for participant safety, and help the community have a good time — a role suited to people with strong interpersonal skills rather than an authoritative streak. Shifts run about six hours on average, with some critical roles covering 24-hour blocks.

Sideburn Rangers are modeled on the original Black Rock Rangers, founded in 1992, and this training is a prerequisite for anyone identified by the khaki shirt at the event.

About this course

This is the online training for Sideburn Rangers. All Rangers must take annual training prior to their first shift. Sideburn Ranger training will also be held at the event. Black Rock Ranger training is an accepted substitute, with a review of our manual. Shift length: Ranger shifts are 6 hours on average, with some critical roles acting in 24 hour shifts.

Rangers keep an eye out for safety at the event; committed to aiding members of the community and facilitating a good time. Rangers are not enforcers or a security force, in fact this role is great for those with decent people skills. You will be roaming the event in teams, participating actively in the event, with added responsibility for a time, and a radio. Ranger’s must have a straight head and be willing to listen to people. They are identified by their khaki shirts.

Sideburn Rangers are modelled on Black Rock Rangers, a group that was founded in 1992 to help participants at Burning Man. Every sanctioned Burning Man regional event has Rangers who operate in similar, but not identical ways.
